Service Provider Details

Why did you choose the service/institution you chose?

I chose the Coimbra Algae Collection (ACOI) because of its recognized expertise in microalgae conservation and its wide diversity of eustigmatalean strains with high scientific and biotechnological relevance. The research environment and quality of the facilities provided an ideal framework to develop the FROST project within a collaborative and specialized setting

How did this access experience support your research?

At ACOI, I had access to a broad range of strains, culture infrastructure, and technical equipment that were essential for developing and optimizing cryopreservation protocols for microalgae. The support of the team and the stimulating research environment enabled solid experimental progress and allowed me to expand my research line toward photosynthetic microorganisms of both scientific and applied importance.

How does your project benefit society, industry, or policy?

Cryopreservation of eustigmatalean microalgae contributes to safeguarding genetic resources that are strategic for the blue bioeconomy. These species have applications in lipid production, bioactive compounds, and aquaculture. Establishing robust cryopreservation protocols supports industrial sustainability, biotechnological innovation, and biodiversity conservation strategies.

How did this experience mark your scientific career?

This stay was particularly significant as it marked my first experience as Principal Investigator within the FROST project. Leading the experimental design and methodological development in an environment such as ACOI strengthened my scientific independence, broadened my expertise toward microalgae cryobiology, and consolidated new international collaborations.

Please share some words of encouragement to future users.

ACOI offers a stimulating and collaborative scientific environment. Making the most of its resources and engaging with the research team can open new research perspectives and foster long-term collaborations with impact beyond the duration of the stay.
